LEONARDOβS WOMAN
It all began with a walk in Birling Gap, which is on the south coast of the UK. As I walked further and further along the chalky shoreline, I discovered that only the most adventurous people were venturing as far as you could walk along. Here, and using the only tool I happened to have at hand, I worked from a Leonardo De Vinci drawing, sketching in the highlights into the chalk as opposed to the shadows.
Birling gap is a heritage National Trust site and the cliffs are constantly being eroded I had to work really quickly before the tide came back in and cut me off, it was also v cold, but what a stunning location and surprise for passers by when they visited the site- I created this for the adventures who would walk a bit further than most people and the sand bank was perfect for making the eco friendly artwork. The only thing I had was some cloth and a potato peeler so this was such fun to do!
Creating in unexpected places is fun
I was very happy with the final result created and this was an unusual piece to create because it was scratching in the highlights only. Just check out the location its like something from another world!
